Since the earliest of times, lapis lazuli has been associated with strength and courage, royalty and wisdom, intellect and truth.

History

Lapis artifacts were found from 700bc
It’s said that alexander the great introduced it to Europe
Cleopatra is said to have ground it up to make her famous blue eye shadow
Lapis appears on Tutankhamun's sarcophagus 
Scholars believe that references in the Old Testament to "sapphire" actually indicate lapis lazuli,
In the middle ages, painters ground up lapis lazuli to make ultramarine paint--the blue used to paint the robes of Mary in churches including the Sistine Chapel.
Meanwhile, in South America, pre-Columbian  were carving, trading and warring over lapis lazuli 
The Sumerians believed that the spirit of their gods lived within the stone, 
The ancient Egyptians saw it as a symbol of the night sky.
